I wrote this for a school assignment. I was supposed to be demonstrating staying in one verb tense.

It was a dark and stormy night. Rain pelted down upon the earth, forming ankle-deep puddles. Lightning flashed, eerily illuminating the looming oak trees. Thunder rumbled across the land, rattling the dishes in the poorest milkmaid's cupboard. High up in the East Tower of the Royal Palace in Madrid stood a ghostly figure. A thin, drawn young woman with flowing ebony hair stood beside the tower's window, her hauntingly green eyes scanning the sleeping city that was being battered by the storm. The figure turned, her loose, filmy white gown fluttering out behind her. A flash of lightning brightened the tiny room, revealing the creature's pale cheeks and blood-red lips. A coronet of gold and inset with lapis lazuli adorned her raven locks, indicating some rank of royalty. The startling green eyes sent a glance out over the city, before the unknown being let out a blood-curdling shriek and vanished into thin air.
